There has been debate regarding the correct time to start using a pillow. Many experts agree it is during the transition from the cot to bed (18 -24 months). Small pillows (or Toddler pillows) are designed for your child’s proportions. A regular pillow is designed to support an adult neck and head, and may lead to strain and discomfort in a child. As parents we hope to avoid constant waking, sleepless nights and poor posture.
Children often give clues and show tell-tale signs that they are ready for a pillow. These include:
- Resting their head on a blanket or toy
- Insisting on using pillows in other places
- Restless at night due to being uncomfortable
- When your child’s shoulders are wider than their heads.
One thing I know from personal experience, once your child has a pillow they love, they will want to take it everywhere with them. Children are great at is making a mess. When choosing the correct pillow for your child not only do you need to consider fit, but also how easy it is to wash. Cases should be easily removable to aid in washing and soaking. It is a great idea to have one pillow for home and one which travels with them in the car, to daycare or any other place they care to take it.
